The Impact of Culture on the Philippines' Rapid Recovery

“The Covid-19 cases in NCR have dramatically increased by 800% in just two weeks! ”says a reporter for Jhomel's favorite news network. After watching the news, Jhomel worriedly ask his father. “Tay, tumataas na naman ang covid-19 cases sa NCR. Kailan tayo magpapabakuna?”. His father annoyingly replied, “Ay sus, naniniwala ka dyan? Hindi totoo yan! Gawa gawa lang yan para takutin at pagkakitaan tayo!”. After the conversation, Jhomel simply believes what his father has told him.

What you’ve read earlier is one of the Filipino culture and unfortunately passed down from generation to generation. We Often hear “MAHALIN ANG SARALING KULTURA” when we study the culture of the Philippines. We've learned that culture can be transmitted and shared to the next generation whether it is negative or positive in one's perspective. According to the book of The wealth of nations by Adam Smith, culture has a huge impact in the country's overall improvement when it comes to economy, health, and Education. Right now, our country is under recovery from the impact of Covid-19. We must improve some of the Filipino culture that affects the country’s overall recovery.

First, the culture of being overly skeptical. It is usual for us, Filipinos to be skeptical since there are lots of misinformation across the country. We have been fed with fake news and fake information from untrusted sources. Our government has been trying to make better policies for everyone’s sake but it’s noticeable that there are some people who don’t comply with these mandates because of being skeptical. Although, they were provided with correct statistics and legitimate information, they still choose to do what they think is right and just for them.

Second, the culture of individualism. “No man is an island”, as the saying goes. But we, Filipinos have this mentality of putting ourselves first before everyone else. We only think of ourselves during tough times and it is very hard for us to unite because of different perspectives and views in life. In other countries like Japan, they set aside their own perspectives for the country’s development and advancement. Japan is continuously improving because of their unity and compliance with the government’s policies. If we have collectivist mentality in the Philippines, it is possible for us to move forward and level up.

Last, the culture of choosing leaders. Policies and instructions are made by the leaders. It is very crucial to choose the right leaders who will lead us to a better future. Unfortunately, some Filipinos are not well-informed to choose what’s best for our country. Because of this, we rely on vloggers who talk about their political bet instead of researching the credentials of the candidates. If we know how to gather information, we can wisely choose the next leaders who will make better policies for the Philippines.

Now, we’ve learned that culture has an enormous impact on country’s advancements. If we improve these areas of culture, we can hope for a fast recovery. Someday,  we will hear the Philippines as one of the fast growing countries in Asia and across the globe. If our culture becomes an impediment to our country’s recovery, MAMAHALIN MO PA BA ANG SARILING KULTURA?
